What is this?

This is information about the Mefight IRC server. It was once the less popular type of chat server, but it is experiencing a resurgence thanks to the Chantago Controversy of 2008-2009.

Basic information

Benji's server address: irc://irc.gamesurge.net/serioustato

Stelas' server address: irc.lunarnet.org (port: 6667, or 4444 if you can't connect via 6667)

For IRC Virgins

If you use Firefox, I'd suggest downloading Chatzilla, which is a Firefox add-on. Do the usual steps of restarting Firefox, etc.

Open chatzilla and enter the irc:// address (above, irc://irc.gamesurge.net/serioustato or irc.lunarnet.org) into the address bar of the regular Firefox address bar. The IRC room should open in Chatzilla.

Stelas' Guide for Virgins

How to work teh IRCs:

There are a lot of different clients out there. I've listed miRC for Windows, Colloquy for Macs, but also a great Firefox addon called Chatzilla or BitchX for *nix types. If you're feeling particularly anti-install, Mibbit is a solid online IRC client that requires no funky java bits or flash bobs. Every client will have some way to set up at the very least a server to connect to (that's irc.lunarnet.org) and a port (typically 6667 - if you're having problems due to college firewalls, try 4444).

Hit connect and you'll get a ton of things blip past in the window, messages of the day and connect strings and so-on. When it stops, you can enter /join #mefightclub and you'll join that specific room. (Many IRC clients will allow you to specify this as a starting channel to automagically join.)

Once in a channel:

  • /query [name] will typically pop open a private window to someone else.
  • /query [name] [message] will do the same, but send that message to them first.
  • /msg [name] [message] will do the same but not pop open a separate window.
  • /join [channel] can make new channels or join existing ones, depending on if they exist yet.
  • /me [action] will display something in third person. ( * Stelas does a hilarious little dance. )
  • /part [channel] will leave a channel.
  • /quit will leave all channels and the server.

There is a reasonably simple name registration affair on the server, allowing you to stop people taking your nick. To use it, you can

  • /msg NickServ REGISTER [password] to register a name, and
  • /msg NickServ IDENTIFY [password] on subsequent uses of that name to identify yourself as actually being you.

Most clients have a method of automatically activating commands to handle this when you connect to a server.

That's really all you need, though I'm happy to help via poking on IRC or via MeMail or whatnot.
