Essentially, a single-player cartoon Diabalo clone.

From Wikipedia: Torchlight is an action role-playing game developed by Runic Games, published by Perfect World Entertainment, Inc. and Encore, Inc, released for Windows in October 2009. The fantasy-themed game is set in the fictional town of Torchlight and the expansive caverns and dungeons nearby, which adventurers explore to collect valuable loot and battle hordes of monsters. Following the October 2009 digital distribution release, a Windows retail box version will be released on January 5, 2010, and a port for Mac OS X is also scheduled for 2010.

Development of the game is led by Travis Baldree, designer of Fate, and Max Schaefer and Erich Schaefer, co-designers of Diablo and Diablo II, joined by the team that developed Mythos.

Absolutely fantastic little game. Not very challenging, generally, but it’s a ton of fun clicking on the little bad guys and collecting interesting loot. Hours and hours of fun.

JD’s one-line review is spot-on. The developers came from the Diablo team, so even they saw it as a “perfection” of the genre. There are many elements of this game superior to Diablo: cool fishing mechanic, more customizable weaponry, and more accessible sets, to name a few. The biggest flaw, however, is a lack of multi-player.

All art is derivative, why can’t a game be? Loved it.

I still am kind of bummed that I didn’t enjoy the game at all. I don’t know why, I just found it kind of boring and blah despite it being right up my alley. I’m glad you folks liked it, though!

This is a beautifully made and incredibly polished game, and it seems to be sucking my free time away in a worrying fashion.

But I have the same complaint about it that I had about Diablo, which may not be surprising. I started playing on “Hard” (the demo made it clear that “Normal” was too easy), and I seem to find every battle either quite easy or completely impossible. Even on “Hard,” I am forever swimming in an ocean of healing potions, because I either don’t need them or I die so suddenly that I don’t have time to use them.

I’m going to keep at it for a while, I think. Maybe I’ll figure it out.
