Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit)

Also known as “Fahrenheit” outside North America, this game was marketed as an interactive movie rather than a game, and it utilizes a large amount of motion captured animation as well as branching story lines and split screen cameras that gives the game a cinematic feel.

The story begins on a cold New York night, when Lucas Kane, the main and primary male protagonist, becomes possessed and stabs a man to death in the restroom of an East Side diner, then flees the scene in confusion. His crime is set against a backdrop of similar ritualistic murders and falling winter temperatures. Lucas has unwittingly become involved in a prophecy that will determine the fate of the world, and he spends the game trying to uncover the supernatural forces behind his crime. Detectives Valenti and Miles are charged with solving the case and tracking Lucas down. The player is placed in control of all three characters, and occasionally of Markus, Lucas’ brother, over the course of the game.

Event triggers in the game are mainly time-based, requiring timing and reflexes, but larger action set pieces and endurance events (used to evoke physical exertion) are also included. The game also provides each character with a “Mental Health” meter, which goes from full (“Neutral”) to empty (“Wrecked”) and represents the character’s mental health. An empty Sanity meter leads to the game ending, with the outcome depending on the specific character.

The original title was changed to Indigo Prophecy in the United States and Canada to avoid confusion with the film Fahrenheit 9/11. Scenes depicting sex (one of which is interactive) and other “adult content” were also removed from the North American versions.

Originally released for the Xbox, PS2, and PC, but also available on the Xbox360.

I loved this game. It was a lot of fun, and the sanity meter was a great feature. It’s not your normal everyday adventure, it’s more like an interactive movie. The quick time events can be kind of annoying, but the rest of the game makes up for it. I loved the story too, which is nice for this type of game.

I got it with the steam holiday sale. It regularly alternates from godawful to extremely awesome. If you are willing to put up with some terrible writing, and some confusing moments, there are some really great ideas here and things worth experiencing.

I’m totally sold on this concept and Quantic Dream has the talent, so I’m really interested to see how Heavy Rain turns out.
