From Wikipedia: “Far Cry 2 (commonly abbreviated as “FC2 or “fc2″) is an open-ended first-person shooter developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It was released on October 21, 2008 in North America and on October 23, 2008 in Europe and Australia. Crytek, the developers of the original game, were not involved in the development of Far Cry 2.

Ubisoft has marketed Far Cry 2 as the true sequel to Far Cry, though the sequel has very few noticeable similarities to the original game. Instead, it features completely new characters and setting, as well as a new style of gameplay that allows the player greater freedom to explore different African landscapes such as deserts, jungles, and savannas. The game takes place in a fictional modern-day East African nation in a state of anarchy and civil war. The player takes control of a mercenary on a lengthy journey to locate and assassinate “The Jackal,” a notorious arms dealer.”

Far Cry 2 is best when things are going horribly wrong. If you aren’t being challenged by it you really ought to up the difficulty. It’s about blowing up a jeep and the grass around you setting on fire and trapping you. It’s about your gun jamming so you panic and have to pull bullets out of your skin. It’s about spending three minutes swimming down the river instead of using a boat so you can hide from the guards.

None of the awesome things that happen really need to happen, and the ones that do (plot points and such) are brilliant (even though everyone talks to fast :p). It’s one of the few games that offer a lot of freedom in how you play and yet still have a sense of pacing.

Yes, the game has problems. There are plenty of options in how you fight but the game doesn’t do a good enough job of making sure you utilize all of them. Beyond the main storyline there isn’t much to do that worthwhile, but it’s a meaty enough game without it. The AI, it is silly.

The game was advertised in a very misleading way, what with being called a sequel to Far Cry even when the games have so little in common and associations with open world games like GTA. It isn’t a playground of weird amusements. I kind of want to punch myself for saying it, but at it’s best this game is something more.

Another one of those games that I tried to get into and failed. Not sure why — the concept and the execution were spot-on, and the game world… well, that’s where it all fell down for me somehow. I kept finding walls in what was supposed to be an open world, and that just broke the immersion for me.

Even though supposedly open worlds like the Fallout 3 one are full of walls as well and I didn’t have a problem with that, for some reason, because FC2 was real-worldy, I guess, I couldn’t forgive it.

That and the respawning intersection dudes. They annoyed the living hell out of me.

I don’t know. The pieces were great, but for some reason I found that their sum just didn’t grip me.
