Day of Defeat
Day of Defeat is an online multiplayer FPS set in the heart of WWII’s European theater. Players join the ranks of an elite military squad on either the Axis or the Allied side. Each team has several player classes that give each squad member a unique role, each with a unique arsenal of historical weaponry at their disposal. The players have to work as a team to achieve a variety of objectives ranging from territorial control to the capture of enemy intelligence or the destruction of enemy fortifications.
Day of Defeat includes a number of scenarios or “maps” based on key historical battles. Official DoD maps included with the game encompass scenes such as the battle at Omaha Beach (dod_charlie), fighting in the streets in the Italian city of Salerno during Operation Avalanche (dod_avalanche), and a paratrooper Glider mission where the American 101st Airborne lands in a WACO Glider and has to destroy such objectives as a radio antenna and Flak 88 mm gun anti-aircraft gun (dod_glider). The online development community has created a near infinite number of additional maps.
Like Counterstrike, DoD started out as a player-developed “mod” based on the Half-Life game engine. The first mod was released in 2000. The success of the game led to its release in a retail version by Valve in 2003. Multiplayer battles were originally coordinated using the WON network, but in 2003 the game was converted to run on Valve’s Steam.

I loved this game, it was my first real multiplayer obsession that I played from Beta. Version 1.2 is my favorite version by far.
Just awesome. Quick paced, grenade lobbing, “who just shot me?” action. Still like to hop in from time to time for a good round of dod_avalanche.
